Some features not often found on CJ’s are the custom front and rear bumpers and roll bar installed, described below:
The front bumper is 3-1/2 inch heavy wall steel tube with welded closed ends. The rear bumper is of one-piece 3 inch channel-iron, miter corners and welded with diamond plate upper top plate. Class II receiver included.
Roll bar is 3 inch tubing front and rear. It has been securely mounted to the double wall area in front where the door hinges are reinforced. An 1/8 inch plate was fabricated to support the front tube bottom with a diagonal brace and bolted to tub bottom and the double wall door column area. The rear portion is secured with a fabricated piece that bolts to the tub with 9 fasteners each side, The roll bar was not removeable originally but is now.
Additional information regarding the TDK chassis-The build quality and strength are far superior to AMC’s frames in weight, wall thickness and strength of the front and rear crossmembers. The weld quality is impressive.
Information on the replacement steel tub-they lack reinforcement is some places that AMC had on their original tubs. The rear flange that bolts to the frame was too simple and lacking in strength-this was ‘boxed in’ across the rear with a piece welded on to stiffen that portion. Another stiffener was welded to the underside of the bed area side to side. Another was removed from the original tub but was not installed and is available.
On the firewall where the brake booster/steering column/pedal assembly bolts to-was single thickness and would have been weak too. The original 1/8 inch plate was retained from the original tub and secured to the firewall for added strength to this area. Body caulking was applied to the back side like the original was. The original data plate/VIN plate is riveted on this stiffener as well.
These tubs come in black primer without seam sealing or caulking. All seams have been sealed and painted, Additional black Hot Rod lacquer primer has been applied.
The extruded aluminum rocker molding is present and all factory fasteners secure them. Lots of CJ’s don’t have these.
Many CJ’s don’t have rear clearance lamps at the rear of the tub-see photos
Included is a 2 inch 3-ring binder will almost all receipts (didn’t get one on the tub) plus information sheets and some 1999 photos of the Jeep as purchased.
Factory owners manual in good condition, 1979 Jeep OEM ‘Technical Service Manual’ with failed binding but all there, covers Cherokees, CJ’s & Wagoneer’s. Additionally a Haynes service manual for 1949-1986 Jeeps.
Driving is sort of tractor like. Pulls strong from low revs, short shifting is normal and revs have been kept low for break-in. Most corners are taken in second gear, some from top gear. The break-in oil was changed at 260 miles with Castrol 20W50. It runs cool with the 3 row radiator, gauge needle just touching the green band-left side. Oil pressure runs around 42 psi at street speed up to 60 psi.
Photo of speedometer is running with cold engine.
Air horns in engine bay have been removed and dual tone horns added 5-22-2022. (air pump drew too many amps for relay).
At last is the reason for selling. The CJ was bought in 1999 when I was aged 50 and 23 years later finds me having no use for it after all that’s been done. There’s a 2017 Wrangler Rubicon here as a daily driver plus 4 more projects to get gone to please a worried wife.
